During the month of October 2023 I was an artist in residence as part of the 33OC AIR program in Toffia (RI) Italy. Very special thanks to Barbara, Alessandro, Pino, Betta, and all the other wonderful people there.
Statement:
The dry visual weight of Italy’s past has always impressed its intoxicating heaviness on me in a way that makes it impossible to find a hard line that divides the natural landscape, the built environment, the past, and the present. It may not actually be possible in a direct way but this is what my work attempts to deal with. The paintings I’m making here in Toffia grow out of a process that I see as parallel to the way that Toffia’s present image is perpetually accumulating through the layering of generations, years, seasons, days, and moments. Quick observational drawings are made of the city and surrounding hills. These drawings are brought back to the studio and used as sources for slower and more abstract paintings.
L’arido peso visivo del passato italiano ha sempre impresso, su di me, la sua inebriante pesantezza in un modo che rende impossibile trovare una lina netta che divida il suo paesaggio naturale, il suo ambiente costruito, il suo passato e il suo presente. Potrebbe non essere effettivamente possibile in modo diretto, ma questo é ció che il mio lavoro tenta di affrontare. I dipinti che sto realizzando que a Toffia nascono da un processo che considero parallelo al modo in cui l’immagine attuale di Toffia si accumula perpetuamente attraverso la stratificazione di generazioni, anni, stagioni, giorni. e momenti. Vengono realizzati rapidi disengi osservativi della cittá e delle colline circostanti. Questi disegni verranno riportati nello studio e utilizzati come fonti per dipinti piú lenti e astratti.
